Ready, Set…Start the Timer

It’s true. We live in an age where A.D.D. is the norm. Visitors to your website aren’t going to take the time to sift through long winded explanations, cluttered paragraphs, or jumbled speech to try to figure out what you are offering.

You may have the flashiest, most aesthetically pleasing, fastest loading web site on the block, but if your Home Page doesn’t sing, your visitors will leave you in the dust, never to return.

Want to prevent that from happening? Great, we can do that for you.

Bottom line? You’ve got to recognize the problem, bullet point the solution, and guarantee results…all in about ten seconds

Traffic Alone Will Not Increase Revenue

SEO, or Search Engine Optimized web content is extremely important. But it realistically only solves one piece of the puzzle. SEO will bring the traffic to your site, but since the visitors are actually human, you’re going to have something extraordinary waiting for them once they find you.

All the traffic in the world will not increase revenue and add to your income if you aren’t solving a problem or offering up a solution that your readers can’t live without.

If you’ve become disillusioned with your online business because the sales just aren’t there….You may not be having a traffic problem, you may be having a boring, compromising, wishy-washy content problem.

I’ve Got Your Answer

At Writers-Elite, we are marketing enthusiasts to the tenth level. We have the ability to analyze your website, pinpoint the vision and the purpose of your business, and bring your mission to life on your Home Page.

If you are ready to take your site to the next level and start converting your web visitors into solid clients, contact us today! You’ll be glad you did.

At Writers-Elite, we have a way with words and we are very excited about it!

There’s quite a bit of frustration out there in the world of Internet Marketing. Much of it revolves around the myth that all search engine optimized (SEO) web content is regurgitated, useless sludge that no one actually wants to read.

As a web copywriter and SEO web content provider, I can relate to the frustrations of business owners and entrepreneurs who are desperately trying to build their online reputation, only to be met with a series of disappointments when it comes to their blogs and web content. After quietly observing some of the decisions many of them make, I can honestly say that I have the answer, but whether they will listen remains to be seen.

Let’s take a quick look at the root of the problem…SEO web content misconceptions. We will also happily dispel a few evil myths along the way.

Misconception #1: Those who do not recognize the true need for SEO web content. “Just write compelling and valuable content. The keywords will naturally flow into it. Write what people want to read and they will find it.” Really? That’s about as silly as thinking that if you open a restaurant on a desert island and serve the best food in the world, somehow, someone will know you are there. Come on, we’re more intelligent than this, aren’t we? No one is going to magically “find” your rocking website filled with killer content, unless it is properly search engine optimized.

Misconception #2: Those who recognize the need for keyword dense content, but choose to fill their website with cheaply spun or plagiarized articles. This person is so blind to the needs of their readers that they’ve gone off the deep end in the complete opposite direction. They believe that as long as they can rise up Google rankings with keywords, it doesn’t matter what kind of crappy content is on their site. Wrong….You may get a lot of initial traffic, but take a look at your bounce rate. No one is going to stay on your site long enough to read 2 paragraphs, let alone purchase your products or services.T

How to Rank Well With Google: Understanding the Search Engine Brain

These misconceptions stem from a basic foundational misunderstanding of the way search engines operate. More specifically, it’s a misconception of the way a search engine crawls a website to gather information. A search engine is not simply a massive find function, like the one in the “Edit” menu of a Word document. Google doesn’t simply pull up any random page that has your chosen keyword in it X number of times. If it did, all pages that show up on search engine results would simply contain a list of the keywords.

Ultimately, writing for the search engines entails writing for web surfers. Think about it: services like Google thrive on giving web surfers the pages they are looking for. If they consistently failed to give people what they wanted, people would stop using them.

Bottom line, in order to rank well with Google you are going to have to realize that your content has to be specifically written for the web. Web content must be informative, a quick and compelling read, preferably with bullet points covering relevant facts that answer specific questions. Most people searching through SEO web content are looking to answer a “how to” or “how does” question. They are looking for a product or a solution to a problem. They have questions…they need quick answers. If your web content isn’t crafted to answer a question or fill a need, you’ll end up on page 33 of Google rankings, regardless of how eloquently written your web content is.

No one is looking for a novel or someone’s opinionated ramblings online. In fact, as far as publications go, newspapers are the only paper publications that have made a smooth online transition, precisely because they are written in short, to-the-point paragraphs that are easy to scan.

Still Think Good SEO Web Content Makes for Bad Reading?

If you are reading these words, congratulations. You’ve just read through an article that is filled with search engine optimized web content. This blog post was optimized using the keyword phrases, SEO web content, search engine, search engines, search engine optimized, and rank well with Google.

The keyword phrases are present in sub-headings and throughout the content. The content itself is easy to scan and is broken up by sub-headings every four paragraphs or so.

Because this post is search engine optimized, if someone types in a phrase like, “SEO web content,” this page has a pretty good chance of showing up.

In short, there’s much more to writing well for the web than just writing well. There’s also much more involved in being able to rank well with Google than stuffing your fluffy, useless post with keywords. If you have enough sense to get your web content written professionally, have enough sense to take some solid advice from me. Use a professional SEO web content writer, such as myself, that will supply highly usable, informative, articles that are also keyword rich and Google friendly.

With well over 75% of individuals using search engines to find local information, it is pretty safe to assume that even the corner deli can benefit immensely from Google Maps local search juice. The time is now to build your local search presence, while Google is still tweaking and improving.

Google Local, which hit the web full-force in March of 2009, has evolved into Google Maps, which now gives local businesses the opportunity to build a solid presence on the web and appear in a top ten list next to an area map. This is ideal for the traveler looking for a certain type of business on their smart phone. By ranking with Google for your location and business category, you can add quite a bit to your bottom line in 2010. If you aren’t getting your share of the traffic, let me show you how it’s done.

If you apply the following tips, your Google Maps ranking will have no where to go but up–Heavy traffic will follow.

Claim and Verifying Your Business Listing

Google Maps gathers it’s local business information through a multitude of online sources. Every listing starts out as “unclaimed.” The first thing you need to do is to look up your own business on Google maps and claim the listing. Once you do so, check and fill in the correct information, (or add your business if it’s not there) and then verify that you are the owner. Google will send you a pin number to your business address through the mail. Once you receive this pin, come back to Google Maps and verify your listing.

Since Google heavily relies on the information it gets from the business owner through GLBC (Google Local Business Center), be as accurate as possible when adding your business information.

Add Keywords to Your Business Name

One tip that will greatly improve your rankings with Google Maps is to include important keywords (such as pizzaria or car wash) after your business name, in the same title space. It’s a small keyword trick that can push you up a few notches in the Google Maps top 10.

Categorize Your Business Correctly

Properly categorizing your business in Google Maps ties for number on the importance level. It can make a huge difference in your ranking.

Google will suggest categories as you type. Use a predefined category for your first couple of category selections. If your type of business is not included in the category choices, come as close as possible with a predefined category, then use your other choices to add your own unique category. You are allowed a total of 5.

To make your categorizing more effective, try to think like a searcher would when looking for your services.

Description

The Google Maps description field should be used to relay the details of your unique products or services to your potential clients. In 200 characters or less, describe the remarkable, valuable and unique qualities of your business. What makes you shine above the competition? Here is your chance to make it clear. There is a small, charming Italian meat market in my town that is the only licensed retailer for certified angus beef in our entire county. This is the kind of information to add to your Google Maps description.

Images and Videos

Google is all about “user experience.” Adding images and videos will help you to gain authority and bring your rankings up. Be sure to include your logo and pictures of your business in the images section. Also upload commercials, interviews, tutorials, etc.

Coupons

The coupon section in Google Maps really excites me. You can actually set up coupons in this section and then track the amount of business you are receiving from Google Maps. Pretty cool, and an easy way to bring new clients to your door instead of your competitor.

Get Reviewed!

Most of your best clients may not even be aware of your business listing with Google Maps. Encourage your clients to write reviews by providing a link to Google reviews right on your website. Google relies on the positive feedback from satisfied clients. This is an excellent way to build a strong business presence.

Follow these tips and Google Maps will help you to make this new decade more prosperous than you’ve ever been before.

Web content and blog posts that are search engine friendly (seo articles) will bring your site to page one rankings with Google. That’s a mouthful, isn’t it? It sounds so impressive at first glance. Page one rankings……OOOOOOH, I want that bag of goods. Well, not so fast cowboy. There’s much to be considered when you hear that magical phrase. Truthfully, the term is used so loosely now it almost has no meaning. Page one rankings for what keyword phrase? should be the question that you ask whenever you hear that statement made, because that one tidbit of information makes a world of difference.

Telling someone you can bring them to page one rankings without disclosing the keyword phrase that will be targeted is like selling someone waterfront property that is actually a shanty sitting on a retention pond. Oh I know I’m ruffling some feathers here, but actually I’m quite sick of the smooth talking web designer or freelance writer that so ardently makes that promise. “I will bring your site to page one rankings within two months,” they boast. Well, guess what? I can bring a site to page one rankings in less than one week if it’s for some obscure search term such as “Robin Marie Hale of Cape Coral.” But that’s not a very good plan, if I want more web traffic.

Recently I had a heated discussion via email with an individual who just “didn’t get it.”

Web design companies who aren’t keeping up with Search Engine Optimization SEO and the purpose of SEO articles, sort of dance around the subject in an obvious, yet sad sort of way. During my most recent conversation regarding the importance of keyword and meta descriptions, I was met with a zinger, “Surely you are not speaking to me regarding this issue, since my company has been building websites for the past ten years.” I promptly put at least five of this company’s sites through a few rankings tools to determine the unique visitors and proper use of keyword phrases, and just as I suspected…Every single site was a train wreck. Hiding under the fact that “you’ve been doing it for X amount of years” is a very poor argument. It’s like the hairdresser who is in her 50′s and thinks that people still want perms and mullets.

Why am I telling you all of this? For one, to get it off of my chest. I personally collaborate with two of the top Search Engine Optimization and Website Design firms in the world–One is based in Orlando and the other in Germany. I study, test, re-test and print pages of data regarding best practices for search engine friendly sites. I don’t like it when I know that there are companies out there, blindly building websites that are not easily read by Google and even worse, are causing their client’s sites to become banned because of duplicate content and placing META keywords in the description box that simply aren’t found in the posts.

Search Engine Optimization isn’t rocket science. There is a simple, easy formula to start off with and once you learn the first few vital steps, it’s just a matter of continued learning and building off the basics. But the basics will ALWAYS be the basics. Let’s talk about targeted keywords for a moment:

Targeted keywords and keyword phrases should be planned out before ever writing that first blog post

They should be used in the Title

They should be used within the first couple of sentences of your post

They should be used naturally throughout the post and never forced

Targeted keywords should consist of words and phrases that will be searched by an average individual that is typing into a Google search box (This seems to be the most difficult one for people to understand. If you are not a celebrity than your name should not be considered one of your main targeted keywords. Someone in Texas is not going to wake up in the morning and say, “Heyyyyy…. I think I need a blog built. I think I’ll look up the words Robin Hale.” If you build blogs and you want traffic and business, one of your targeted keyword phrases should be “build my blog”… Get it? It’s not that difficult.)

Yes, it’s a bit more complicated than that, because you shouldn’t try to compete with major keyword phrases. That will make it much more difficult to rank well. If you sell Detroit Tigers pencils, don’t try to rank for the keyword phrase “Detroit Tigers.” You’ll be up against ESPN, Sports Authority and everyone else. Instead, use the keyword phrase “Detroit Tigers pencils” and write blog articles that include the phrase “Detroit Tigers pencils” in the title and body of your post. That’s how a winning niche blog gets to page one for a term that someone looking for Detroit Tigers pencils will actually search for. SEO is all about getting noticed, being found, and letting your potential clients know where you are. If you are selling Detroit Tigers pencils, don’t fill your blog with articles that you rip off from ESPN about baseball. You may think to yourself, “Hey…This is interesting stuff. My readers probably want to see this.” What readers? By copying and pasting other web content directly to your own blog, you are creating duplicate content which Google greatly frowns upon (let alone the plagiarism factor). When Google searches your site and finds that your new post is already somewhere else on the web, guess what happens? Your site tumbles in rankings. A couple more mishaps like that and your site will be banished forever to the Island of Misfit Blogs.

With that said, there is a real reason why corporations and businesses pay writers (such as myself) to create unique, intelligent, well researched, and ORIGINAL web content for their blogs. They supply the writer (me) with a list of keyword phrases that represent their product or services and I take that list and plug those words and phrases into the title and body of my articles. It’s both a science and an art to be a good web content writer. First there is the talent of writing something that another individual actually wants to read, and then it must be combined with the ability to plug certain keyword phrases into that creative, witty, informative content…..Whew!

On a good day, I personally have the ability to write five well researched and search engine friendly articles. Some subjects take a bit more time and once in a while I get a brain block, but overall my average is five. I’ve read forums where countless “writers” boast over ten articles per day. I’ve even heard claims of one article every 20 minutes. I cringe when I consider the quality of these 20 minute disasters.

Just like anything else, some people get it and some people don’t. I suppose the ratio will forever stay the same, regardless of my level of approval or disapproval. Just remember, when writing your next blog post:

Do not copy and paste another person’s work (even if you give them credit)

Do figure out your site’s targeted keyword phrases in advance and use them naturally throughout your post

Use one of your keyword phrases in your title

If you do those three things, you will be miles and miles ahead of most of the blind bloggers and web writers out there. We’ll talk about linking strategies in another post, but for now at least you won’t be banned to the Island of Misfit Blogs… Merry Christmas.

Fresh out of blog post ideas? Coming up with your next awesome post can sometimes feel like you are chasing the wind. Your content needs to be relevant, timely and interesting enough to be able to draw visitors to your site that actually will read the material you provide. On top of that, you also need to craft search engine optimized, or seo articles in order to rank well with Google. Finding that perfect mix of the two can sometimes be quite a task.

Professional bloggers can often spin topic ideas off of questions and comments that are sent to them or posted on their blogs. But what if you are relatively new to the blogging world and are experiencing somewhat of a brain block?

Here’s an awesome and helpful tool for you: Google alerts. Hands down, Google alerts is one of the best tools for perusing through the latest and hottest content in the blogosphere that are directly related to your niche.

How do you use Google alerts? Easy. Simply enter the topic you wish to monitor by typing in a particular keyword phrase, include your email address and soon you will begin to receive email alerts on recently indexed posts relating to your niche. You’ll find yourself buzzing with new blog post ideas and have instant inside information to the newest trends in your market.

There is also an area to input the type of selection you want. Maybe you are only interested in alerts from news websites, blog posts or video blogs. There is also a period setting which is handy if you don’t want a continuous barrage unleashed into your inbox. You can set the alerts to arrive daily, weekly or as-it-happens. I use the daily option but if you want the news “as it hits the web” you may want to brave it and choose the as-it-happens option.

Tips to get the most relevant alerts? When setting up your Google alerts, make sure to use a small and precise number of keywords to get the most accurate results.

You can create up to 1000 alerts, but unless you have all day to read blog posts, I’d keep it to 5 or under. Be specific with a topic and keywords.

Just as a side note idea: If you are a business owner and want to know who is saying what about you, set one Google alert to your first and last name and one for your business name (including your city). If you own a franchiseone set up a seperate alert with only your business name so that you can be aware of all the news and views pertaining to your company as a whole.

Pretty cool stuff, huh? With this convenient tool, your next great blog post idea could be waiting for you right in your inbox.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is all About Keywords and Search Behavior.

Now that building a website has been demystified by the ease of blogging (no more calling up the webmaster to make changes to your site), a recent army of SEO experts have emerged. Many of these “experts” are flexing their muscles by claiming that an understanding of SEO is beyond the scope of most business owners…Not true.

What Did She Just Say?

I know, I know…I can hear it now. Another round of ‘who does she think she is?’ Well, anyone who disagrees with me is most welcome to exit this site by using that charming little x located at the top right-hand corner of the screen.

SEO is not a mystery. Are there a lot of useful tools that can simplify the basics of keyword optimization? Of course. Do you absolutely have to use all of the bells, whistles and pages of data to rank with Google? No….

It does take a certain knack, but can easily be understood and quickly picked up by just about anyone.

What is the Bottom Line?

In a nutshell, the bottom line involves these two facts.

Fact number one: Your business blog must have a common theme that obviously shows throughout the entire site.

Side Note: In order to enjoy optimum rankings you need a blog. (Blogs receive lots of page-rank love from Google…This is covered in an exciting presentation by Matt Cutts, the head of the webspam team at Google who specializes in search engine optimization (SEO) issues. He highly recommends WordPress for fast indexing by Google)

Now back to the explanation of the necessary ‘common theme.’

Example: If you sell tires online and have a blog, your articles should all involve tires in some way. Types of tires, how to dispose of old tires, top 10 best tires, most reliable tires, etc. If a new Fast and the Furious comes out, go ahead and blog about it, but be sure to tell your readers what type of tires the car has and how well these tires perform.

Keeping a common theme will force you to naturally use keywords and keyword phrases that all pertain to your main objective—selling tires.

Fact number two: Think like the average Google searcher thinks.

Consumers who use search engines to locate information on the web are similar to people who are hungry. Instead of food, searchers are following impulses in varying degrees to supplement them–like a mental or emotional snack that essentially seeks fulfillment to satiate the desire.

If you can simply think like the ‘hungry searcher’ thinks when they are typing words into that little Google search box, you will be able to easily optimize and position your pages for mass consumption.

Keywords (or the words that a searcher types) represent the face of quantified intent. If increasing organic search engine traffic is important to your business, you are going to have to understand this part of SEO. Anyone searching is a potential motivated buyer. In order to be found, your pages must appease the way that THEY search.

Because of the human element involved in search queries—technology, keyword analysis and SEO tools can only take the “search engine guru” so far in site optimization. In order to blog for the potential buyer you need to take the way individuals search into consideration.

Let’s use myself and my husband as prime examples. If I were trying to find the mailing address for the Notre Dame football coach, I would use main keywords only. My search query would look like this:

Notre Dame football Charlie Weis mailing address

I might also add the word 2009 to the query, just to be sure Google returns recent information. Now my husband is a different story. His Google searches look like he is talking to a live person or a crystal ball. His search query would say:

How do I write a letter to Notre Dame’s coach Charlie Weis?

So, which is right? Well, of course, in my mind—mine is right. I can generally find information on the web much faster than my husband can. But what if we are both customers looking for a product. Then who is right? Should he lose out and not be able to purchase what he is looking for because he is not searching the proper keywords? That kind of thinking is ludicrous.

The consumer should not be the one to change. In order to attract the maximum amount of traffic, the blogger is the one who needs to change. By using common sense (and by observing how other individuals search for information on the web) you will soon be able to maximize your traffic to include every type of hungry searcher.

Immediate Changes You Can Make

Now that you are aware of this little gem of information, you can immediately begin to put it to good use. How? By modifying titles, meta descriptions, as well as internal and outbound links, to accommodate every type of searcher.

Want swarms of traffic from this ‘other half’ of Google searchers? Start implementing these phrases:

How to

How Do I

I Need to

What is the Best

Pricing for

I Want to Buy

Should I

You would be amazed to see what some people type in as keywords:

How Do I Find Out What Oil to Put in My Car?

How Often Should I Change my Oil?

I Need to Buy a Detroit Tigers Jersey.

Some people (like my husband) search how they talk. The point is this, contextual long tail keyword phrases placate tremendous search volume by their very design. We can discern the urgency or emotion behind the persona of the searcher by observing these traces of search intent.

By taking the time to think about the mindset of the consumer who is trying to locate your specific product or service, you can come up with an entire list of phrases that will bring eager consumers to your site.

The True Essence of SEO

SEO is not just about numbers and driving random traffic to your blog. SEO is all about targeting intent.

Think outside the box. Look beyond traditional keyword research tools and identify emotional triggers and catch phrases with significant volume attached.

Meta-Descriptions

Another huge mistake bloggers often make, is leaving off meta-descriptions. The meta-description is the little blurb that appears on Google’s search engine page. It is the first thing an individual reads when skimming the search engine results page and is a critical part of the SEO formula. Changes here can result in dramatic post-click marketing conversions.

The key is to capture the fleeting intent of a consumer and initiate the post-click marketing when they are in the heat of the search.

Content is Crucial

Now that the hungry searcher has clicked on your site, you must be able to feed them with benefit-rich, valuable information along with an emotionally-charged call to action such as:

How to Increase Your Chances of Landing the Job You Really Want by 500%

Cut Your Electric Bill in Half in these 3 Easy Steps

Look beyond keyword phrases that use less than four words. These are wonderful, but highly competitive for page one Google rankings. Use them along with long-tail phrases and you will have the best of both worlds in terms of traffic.

Here’s another myth debunked: The falicy that there are specific rules and ‘tricks of the trade’ to keyword research.

There are no cut and dry rules to keyword research, aside from finding the sweet spot of conversion. Since its all about matching queries with products and services, don’t be afraid to break away from the pack and devour a niche from targeting contextual conversation (in query form) to increase traction from consumers already eager to purchase.

Keywords are the SEO juice that fuels your website. In simplest terms, a keyword phrase is that MAGICAL combination of words that an individual types into the little Google search space right before they hit ‘enter.’ These magical words are a vital element in your Google indexing strategy. Why? Well, it’s like this… If you sell the highest powered, best tasting energy drink on the planet but the keywords that you use on your website never match anything that the average person types into a search (such as ‘best energy drink’ or ‘fast working energy drink’) no one will ever find your site. Essentially, all the efforts put in to tweak your site for top rankings on Search Engines will bring zero results if the targeted keyword phrases are not right.

The key here is to use the most relevant keywords and keyword phrases naturally throughout the different parts of your website, instead of using all the keywords in one article at one time. Higher relevance is given to certain areas of the HTML documents by various search engines, so you’ve got to spread that keyword mojo all throughout your site.

Choosing the best keywords and keyword phrases is step one for your SEO campaign. It is the most critical step and you’ve got to get it right.

Here are specific instructions that clearly lay out the Best Practices for correctly using your keywords:

In the <title> tag – Search results always show the title tag as your page title. Best Practice: Keep the title short (5-10 words). The keyword should appear in the tag/title. Near the beginning of the title is best practice.

In anchor text – Best Practice: Use anchor text with keyword focus from external links. Inbound links are like double-shock power…great for the site and for revving up the keyword credibility as well.

In headings – Keys: The keywords in the heading (in H1) are important, but only if the page contains actual content relevant to the keyword. Keep the heading precise (5-10 words)

Using the keyword as the first word of the heading…Priceless

In the URL – Careful, careful…This helps to rank but keyword should be found throughout the article or post or you may be penalized.

Proper density – Best Practice: Keep keyword density under 10%. Use 7-8% for targeted keywords and keyword phrases. Not more than 3. Stick to 1-2% for secondary keywords on the page.

Grand entrance – Best Practice: The keyword should appear within the first 50 words of the content.

In images – Label images with <alt>/<title> tag filled with some keywords. Spiders read these tags.

In H2 – H6 headlines….More good ideas

In Meta Tags? – Well, okay. Yahoo and Bing use this. Google doesn’t. It won’t hurt anything so go ahead.

Proximity – What’s that? It’s the closeness between keywords. Keyword phrases without words in between is best practice, but sometime can’t be placed naturally. Close proximity keywords will still rank.

Synonyms: Search engines have algorithms that take synonyms into consideration, so they do rank.

Worst Practices Dumb Ideas:

Using Keyword misspellings in the content – Bad idea. Remember, you are ‘ranking’ with the search engines, but still have intelligent first time visitors to impress. If you know your target keywords have popular misspellings put them in the Meta Tags.

Dilution – Excessive unrelated keyword optimization will negate all keywords. Lose-Lose situation.

Stuffing – Using a density of more than 10% is considered stuffing and can get you banned by Search Engines.

That’s the bottom line of proper and improper use of keywords for search engine optimization. Following these practices will bring qualified traffic to your site, and that’s what you are looking for!

If the title of this article is like reading a foreign language, that’s okay. Basically, here is the deal. If you take the time to write relative, useful comments on blogs that are highly ranked (and allow do follow) your own ranking will increase because of the link you’ve created.

This should be one little trick that you continually use. If you don’t have a lot of time, you can hire out (preferably to us, here at Writers Elite). If you are going to do it yourself, two to three times per week should bring in some nice results. You’ll want to go ahead and start now though, updates are only made every couple of months. By starting in August, you may see a page rank increase by the end of October. But October is going to arrive anyway, so it may as well bring with it the gift of having a more highly ranked blog.
